Yellow Met Office wind warnings have been issued for northern England and southern Scotland.

Storm Barbara caused travel disruption as it brought heavy rain across most of Ireland yesterday, and Storm Conor may yet arrive to the north-west on Christmas Day.

Gusts reaching nearly 120mph were recorded on the summit of Cairn Gorm at 11am and winds of 60mph to 70mph are expected across the west and north-west of Scotland later.

"With Storm Conor on its way, people across Scotland and northern England could be facing severe weather conditions such as winds of up to 80 miles per hour".

A lightning strike affected around 13,000 customers in Lewis and Harris, though all homes were reconnected within two hours.

"We are acutely aware of the time of year and the increasing concern this brings and would like to reassure our customers we will be doing all we can to keep disruption to a minimum".

There have been cancellations to some ferry services while revised schedules and cancellations of flights to the islands are also expected.

The Met Office has issued amber "be prepared" warnings for the north and west of Scotland on Friday and Saturday.

Driving conditions could be more hard during the evening rush-hour with also the potential for heavy rain to accompany the high winds.

But after the weather has exhausted itself out with Storm Barbara and Conor in the space of three days, things are expected to calm down on Boxing Day.

"Temperatures will be up in double figures on Christmas Eve and this mild weather will hang on for much of Christmas Day", Ms Lowe continued.

"We would urge everyone to check the latest sources of information before they travel and keep in mind that the situation can change quickly".
