The Duke of Edinburgh was driven to the St Mary Magdalene Church.

"Her Majesty is now Patron of more than 600 organisations and has enjoyed a close and active association with a great number of them throughout her reign", a statement from Buckingham Palace said.

However, preparations for her funeral have already been in place for years and the arrangements are regularly updated in consultation with the queen herself.

The late decision follows the monarch, 90, missing a Christmas Day service close to her rural retreat for the first time since 1988.

He and other members of the royal family attended the New Year service Sunday at the church on the grounds of Sandringham estate.

Queen Elizabeth II missed a traditional New Year's Day church service Sunday because of the effects of a lingering cold.

While Prince Philip has reportedly improved, it was today announced that the Queen is still too unwell to make today's New Year's service.

A Twitter account with the handle @BBCNewsUKI sent out a message claiming Buckingham Palace had announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen remained indoors to recuperate from the persisting illness, according to an earlier Buckingham Palace statement.

It comes just days after Buckingham Palace was forced to confirm that the Queen was still alive, after rumours of her death circulated on social media.

Family and staff are said to be in shock at the news, stating that when they last saw her the Queen seemed in good spirits and "quite chirpy about being the only celebrity left".
