More than 1000 migrants storm border at Spain's Ceuta

  • Migrants attempt to storm Spanish enclave

On Monday, a French national was arrested for trying to board a ferry out of Ceuta with a camper van where 12 Algerians were found hiding, "car sick and sweating", police said.

The area has been a hotbed of conflict recently as migrants from sub-Saharan Africa have tried to climb over the fence while seeking save havens in Europe.

After stopping her, officers asked her to open the suitcase and discovered a young male inside.

Last month alone, more than 1,000 migrants from across Africa tried their luck at Ceuta, a small Spanish enclave at Morocco's northern edge. The phantom-like image, released by the Spanish Interior Ministry, is perhaps even more shocking than that of the Gabonese teenager.

The immigrant, a 19-year-old from Gabon, was treated by medics who feared he had suffered from a shortage of oxygen while in the suitcase.

He was found inside the bag being carried by a 19-year-old woman.

A Moroccan woman who was carrying the suitcase was arrested by the Spanish Civil Guard on December 30.

The incident this Sunday was only one small part of a larger drama that played out at the border in Ceuta.

A group of 1,100 people from sub-Saharan Africa trying to reach Europe stormed the border fence just after 4 am (0300 GMT) on New Year's Day in an "extremely violent and organised" way, said the central government's representative office in Ceuta.

Dozens of the migrants made it to the top of the fence, but they were removed - back to the Moroccan side - by cranes. One guard lost an eye, officials said.

In early December more than 400 sub-Saharan African migrants managed to force their way over the Ceuta border fence.

The Ceuta peninsula on the Mediterranean in Morocco is controlled by Spain and has traditionally been used as an transit point for trips to the Spanish mainland. Most others take the riskier, but more often successful, sea route to Italy from Libya.

The two migrants were immediately administered with emergency first aid.
