Nissan's self-driving system contacts a human helper to resolve hard situations

07 January, 2017, 01:19 | Author: Sam Montgomery

To complement these new technologies, Ghosn announced a new partnership with 100 Resilient Cities - Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation (100RC), a global non-profit organisation that helps cities lay the groundwork for autonomous drive, electric vehicles, and new mobility services. In this situation, SAM isn't asking for the car's passengers to act, but rather an available "mobility manager" (presumably some standby operator patched in through Wi-Fi).

An actual human (called a mobility manager) in that center will look at vehicle images and sensor data to determine how to handle it, and it will be under the manager's control until the manager leaves it to its own devices, pun intended.

Las Vegas - Nissan Motor Co. believes it can help bring self-driving vehicles to the masses using technology developed by NASA.

SAM is based on NASA's Visual Environment for Remote Exploration (VERVE) which is used to oversee robots - like NASA's Curiosity - on the space agency interplanetary missions. They wanted to reduce facilities in order to ease congestion. We need a huge number of vehicles out there. The auto is promised "in the near future", which we'd take to mean sometime this year.

The tests will be conducted using electric vehicles provided by Nissan and coincide with similar testing already underway in Europe, the United States, and China.

He confirmed that at least one LEAF version would have a maximum range "at or above 200 miles", which appears to be the new minimum benchmark for EVs. However, we do know that the new Leaf will be equipped with Nissan's ProPilot autonomous driving technology.

Renault-Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn told a tech gathering Thursday the automaker is committed to self-driving cars, as he unveiled a series of initiatives to advance the technology.

Today, most automobile manufacturers are aiming to make autonomous driving technologies ubiquitous in the coming years. Nissan will also bring Cortana, Microsoft's virtual assistant to its vehicles.

Further, Ghosn has previously announce that they are into partnership with non-profit small cities as they plan to target these self-driving vehicle and thus cities must work as partners as well.
