DPS Director Frank Milstead says in a Twitter post the trooper was shot but that he apparently "will be OK after some recovery". The suspect had shot the trooper, then fought the trooper to the ground when the passerby stopped.
Officials said they were trying to determine exactly what happened and that the investigation faced major hurdles with the trooper seriously injured and two of the others involved dead. The trooper left the traffic stop to investigate this call when he came across a rollover crash and saw that a woman had been ejected from the wreckage.
Investigators said the officer was on his way to a call of shots fired at a vehicle at about 4:20 a.m. when he encountered a rollover accident.
The trooper was rushed to an area hospital, where he underwent surgery.
When he started to block lanes and put out flares, a suspect ambushed him, opening fire then physically attacking him. The woman who was ejected in the rollover crash died from her injuries, authorities said.
Milstead said he had not yet had a chance to speak to the man, who was traveling with his wife to California at the time.
