No Jalikattu this Pongal, SC refuses to give verdict before Saturday

In a major blow to Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court on Thursday turned down a plea seeking its intervention to pass judgment on Jallikattu before Saturday.

Both the ruling AIADMK party and opposition DMK came out with statements portraying the importance of Jallikattu to Tamil culture, and vowed to push the Centre in this regard.

With Tamil Nadu asking the Centre to promulgate an ordinance to enable the smooth conduct of bull taming sport Jallikattu, the government today said "things are ready from our side" but insisted that it would wait for the Supreme Court decision regarding the issue.

The apex court, however, said that a draft of judgement has been prepared but it was not possible to deliver it before Saturday - when Jallikattu is to be organised.

Earlier, the apex court had observed that the country can not "import a Roman Gladiator-type of sport" as it is against the culture of compassion towards animals. Dave also added that bulls are not ill-treated during the performance and wished the Supreme Court would look into all aspects of the case.

The court banned the sport in 2014 citing animal cruelty, and upheld the order a year ago and dismissed the state government's review petition. The Centre had contended that jallikattu was inextricably linked to the rural life of Tamil Nadu, where villagers can not shed their centuries-old culture and "go watch Formula One racing". This, eventually, makes it impossible for the state to hold the sport during Pongal festivities this year.

It had said if the parties were able to convince the court that its earlier judgement was wrong, it might refer the matter to a larger bench. Last year, it upheld the held the order when it dismissed state government's review petition. Justice Misra, who is heading the bench hearing the case, also declined permission to file an application for an interim lifting of the stay on the government notification for Pongal.
