Detective McDonald was an inspiration to countless New Yorkers. He is a model for each of us as we go about our daily lives. Steven McDonald remember his father as the "real Superman" who did more while wheelchair bound than most able-bodied dads ever could.

"You could see that he was such a fervent Catholic", Cardinal Dolan said. Despite his devastating injuries, McDonald became an inspiration to people across the world with his message of peace and forgiveness.

The first-grade detective was paralyzed from the neck down in 1986 after he was shot by a teen bicycle thief in Central Park.

"Thank you for everything that everyone has done for us, not just this last week but over the past 30 years". The bullet pierced his spinal column.

He is survived by his wife and longtime caregiver, Patricia, and his son, Conor, who was an infant when McDonald's famous statement was delivered. However, McDonald pulled through.

"Since that fateful day in 1986, Steven dedicated his life to fighting hate and encouraging forgiveness through his actions", PBA President Patrick Lynch said in a statement.

The daylong event began with a rosary led by Detective McDonald and his wife, who plans to continue her participation with the walk.

The correspondence ended after McDonald "turned down a request from Mr. Jones's family to seek parole", according to the Times, saying "he was not knowledgeable or capable enough to intervene".

Following the mass, McDonald's casket was led out of the cathedral draped in a green NYPD flag as the department band played "Amazing Grace".

Ironically, Jones was fatally hit by a auto, three days after he was released from prison in September 1995.

For years after the shooting, McDonald drew widespread attention and media coverage. In the years following the shooting, McDonald met with Pope John Paul II and Nelson Mandela, and sat for an interview with Barbara Walters. Although he was able to breathe only with the help of a respirator, McDonald crossed the country speaking at schools and other venues about the importance of forgiveness and peace. He is the fourth generation of the family to serve in the department.

In a eulogy that was cheered by officers, New York City Police Commissioner James O'Neill said McDonald "redefined what a hero is". He was one of eight children of David and Anita McDonald.

The funeral for NYPD Detective Steven McDonald is being held this morning at St. Patrick's Cathedral. "Despite the tremendous pain in his life, both physical and emotional, his concern for his fellow police officers and for the people of New York City never wavered".
