  • Who is Lord Snowdon? Princess Margaret's former husband dies

LORD Snowdon, Princess Margaret's former husband, has died aged 86, a family spokesperson has said. He remains the only photographer to have had sittings with 90-year-old Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest running monarch.

Born Anthony Armstrong-Jones, he was made the Earl of Snowdon in 1961 and was given a life peerage in 1999.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that The Queen is aware of Lord Snowdon's death.

Lord Snowdon was one of the UK's most famous photographers.

He has worked with Vogue and the Sunday Times Magazine on a number of hard-hitting documentary subjects too, including loneliness and mental health.

The couple shared two children together - David Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto.

He was named the Earl of Snowdon a year after the couple married and a month before their first child, David, was born. In fact, he met Princess Margaret while shooting portraits of the royal family in the 1950s.

They married at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 1960, with Princess Anne as a bridesmaid and Prince Philip escorting the bride down the aisle. It was the first divorce of a senior Royal since Princess Victoria of Edinburgh in 1901.

Margaret never remarried, but Lord Snowdon went on to marry Lucy Mary Lindsay-Hogg later that same year. It was discovered that Lord Snowdon had fathered a son, Jasper William Oliver Cable-Alexander, in 1978 with journalist Melanie Cable-Alexander.

Princess Margaret and Tony Armstrong-Jones, as he was then known, were introduced at a dinner party in May 1958.
