Hamas slams 'absurd' Paris peace conference

The summit did not include Israel or the Palestinians, although they were invited to come to Paris afterward. The French-convened Paris conference on the Middle East on Sunday was attended by 70 nations, including the outgoing USA secretary of state, John Kerry.

While the Paris summit attempted to present a unified front against Israel, two major players at the conference - the United Kingdom and Australia - voiced dissent from the summit's closing statements.

The Embassy of the State of Palestine to South Africa has rubbished claims that Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane was set to meet with leaders of the Palestine Authority during his recent visit to Israel and Palestine.

On Monday, Trump called on Britain to veto future UN Security Council resolutions relating to Israeli matters.

President-elect Donald Trump's proposal to move the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is also a cause for concern for the Palestinian government as both states claim the city as their rightful capital.

The Conference was meant to urge Palestinians and Israelis to commit to a two-state solution, as the President-elect Trump has committed to recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"Jared is such a good kid and he'll make a deal with Israel that no one else can", said Trump.

The joint statement released at the end of the Paris conference calls upon Israel and Palestine to "officially restate their commitment to the two-state solution, thus disassociating themselves from voices that reject this solution", according to another report from the Times of Israel.

- Tomorrow's world - ==================== Netanyahu said Sunday he was waiting for Trump, who has said there is no politician as pro-Israeli as him, to enter the Oval Office.

The two-state solution would split the city and allow for Palestine to claim East Jerusalem as their capital.

The some 70 countries present in Paris warned they would not recognise unilateral actions that threaten a negotiated solution, while Palestinian leaders have threatened retaliatory measures. On Saturday, he also denounced the potential transfer of the USA embassy from Tel Aviv, where it has been for the past 68 years.

"To this end, it is hoped that - with the support of the global community - measures can be taken that favour mutual trust and contribute to creating a climate that permits courageous decisions to be made in favour of peace", the Vatican said.

Other countries saw the British stance as a concession to Trump, who has anxious Middle East experts with a plan to move the USA embassy to Jerusalem.

Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erakat said the Paris conference "created a momentum" towards the end of Israel's occupation of the West Bank and east Jerusalem, which the Jewish state seized in a 1967 war. The British government likely fears that the conference risks becoming a means to circumscribe future USA policy on Israel before the Trump team has decided on it.

The appointment called on the worldwide community to continue the work of promoting a negotiation, which can only be developed by the parties involved.

In a separate English-language statement, he hailed the Vatican's hosting of a Palestinian embassy.
