Japan's Rocket Crashes Back To Earth In Launch Failure

  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's SS-520 satellite launches at its Uchinoura Space Center in Kimotsuki Kagoshima Prefecture Japan in this

The first stage went off without a hitch but communication problems prevented the second stage from igniting and carrying a carrying a micro-satellite, TRICOM 1, into orbit.

SS-520-4 Rocket design is 31 foot tall.i.e. 9.5 meters and its expanded upon a two-stage sounding rocket that was capable of lifting experiments to space for a few minutes.

Because of this, both rocket and satellite fell back mid-flight to drop in the ocean, a report from the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) stated.

JAXA's mini rocket, which is a modified version of a larger SS-520 machine that debuted 18 years ago, clearly needs some work, but once the creases are ironed out, the space agency hopes to attract attention from companies around the world on the hunt for for efficient and economical satellite launch vehicles.

Primarily funded by a $3.5 million budget provided by the the Japanese government's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the SS-520-4 test flight was a one-off demonstration by Japan's space agency, which aims to validate low-priced technology and launch operations procedures for a future "nano-launcher" to deploy tiny satellites in orbit on dedicated rides. If the flight was successful, the solid-fueled booster would have become the smallest rocket to ever put an object in orbit around Earth. Measuring 9.5 meters (32 feet) tall, about the size of a telephone pole, the rocket is the world's smallest and lightest booster created to deliver satellites into orbit.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said the research and development project aims to demonstrate a relatively cheap launch concept using commercially-available technology.

The SS-520 rocket was carrying an Earth-observation microsatellite called TRICOM-1, an experimental CubeSat built at the University of Tokyo. JAXA had added an extra third stage to the SS-520-4 to help give satellites additional boost they need to enter the orbit. (It measured just 35 feet long by 20 inches wide.) And a team of engineers retooled the rocket to use commercially-produced electronic parts found in computers and smartphones. The venture's financial plan was $3.5 million, and it was an exceptional showing toward building future "nano launcher" rockets. This was the rocket's first flight.
