Badlands tweets about global warming were by ex-employee

  • Park Twitter Account Willfully Ignoring Trump’s Social Media Gag Order Tweets Climate Science

Through now-deleted tweets that delighted thousands of climate activists and other anti-Trump factions, the Badlands National Park's Twitter account momentarily flouted the new administration's gag order which prevented government agencies from using social media.

One read: "The pre-industrial concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 280 parts per million (ppm)".

The move came as the main National Parks Service Twitter account was temporarily taken offline, after it re-tweeted photos that compared the crowd sizes of President Obama's 2009 inauguration to President Trump's.

The park service had retweeted photos about turnout at President Donald Trump's inauguration.

The next day the Park Service issued an apology, said it was a mistake, and appeared to regain its Twitter privileges.

He didn't address Tuesday's Badlands tweets, but the National Park Service told a reporter for Buzzfeed that they too were the result of password misuse by a former employee.

President Trump has, in the past, used tweets to label climate change as a Chinese "hoax".

A spokesman for the National Parks Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and no one answered the phone at the park's Interior, S.D., office.

Out of all this was born a new Twitter account called AltUSNatParkService.

Someone behind the account later apologized for the tweets, and said the agency initially asked for a social media halt because they wanted to check whether the account had been hacked. Gizmodo reported that NPS employees were sent an email last week that directed them to stop using official accounts, by decree from Washington. That same stance is largely reflected in the people he has nominated to lead government agencies, like the EPA, Interior Department, State Department, Energy Department, and Agriculture Department.

He has not yet spoken publicly about the national parks' tweets. Trump's administration removed all references to climate change on its website. Reports surfaced Tuesday that the administration had also ordered the EPA to remove information about climate change from its web page, but newer reports suggest the White House is walking back that order. The park's Twitter account feed addresses the national security implications of climate change, rising water temperatures and the decline of species driven by global warming.
