Iran retaliates against Trump executive order

Trump also issued a 90-day ban on all entry to the USA from seven Muslim-majority countries with terrorism concerns, including Syria.

Iran's Foreign Ministry has censured a recent "affront" decision made by the new USA government to restrict arrivals from the Islamic Republic and six other Muslim countries, vowing that Tehran would respond to the move in kind.

Well, just when we thought the ACLU had the loudest response to Trump's executive order banning immigration from seven countries in the Middle East and Africa for three months, threatening a lawsuit, Iran has made a much more sinister announcement.

Trump's order affects individuals from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Somalia and Sudan.

A follow-up tweet promised a reciprocal response: "While respecting Americans & differentiating between them & hostile USA policies, Iran will take reciprocal measures to protect citizens".

"The recent decision [made by] the United States of America includes illegal and irrational expectations which are against worldwide law", the ministry pointed out. The official added that the Trump administration had been working on the order and its implementation for "many weeks" during the transition process, including consultation with State Department and Homeland Security officials.

The new order specifically bars Syrian refugees from entering the United States indefinitely, or until the president himself decides that they no longer pose a threat to the nation.

He said the ban was needed to keep out "radical Islamic terrorists".

"Identifying specific countries with Muslim majorities and carving out exceptions for minority religions flies in the face of the constitutional principle that bans the government from either favouring or discriminating against particular religions", he said in a statement.

Now Iran has blasted the ban as an "open affront to the Muslim world and our nation" and vowed revenge.

"We are required to ensure passengers have the required documents for entry into, or transit the countries they are traveling to", said spokeswoman Isabelle Arthur. The Iranian ban would remain in place until Trump's order is lifted. "Even if there are walls between nations, they must be removed", Rouhani said.

Of the countries targeted, Iran sends the most visitors to the United States each year, some 35,000 people. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also criticized Trump after Trump had also announced the building of a wall on the Mexcican border.

"They have forgotten that the Berlin Wall collapsed many years ago". It also halts the issuing of new visas from the seven countries affected.
