  • Not everyone at Calvin College is on board with Betsy De Vos for Education Secretary

Targeted by massive voter outreach, two Republican senators, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, told their Senate colleagues today they will not support Betsy DeVos for education secretary.

Five members of the Greenville County school board visited the Washington offices of the state's USA senators this week to urge them to vote against Betsy DeVos, the school-choice activist nominated by President Donald Trump to become the next US secretary of education.

Assuming all other Republicans vote for DeVos and all Democrats vote against, that means the vote breakdown is now tied at 50-50. That would require Vice President Mike Pence to cast a tie-breaking vote.

"The Republican majority on the Senate HELP Committee made a critical mistake today".

Trump's Education Secretary nominee, Betsy DeVos, however, seems to be struggling.

DeVos is a Republican education activist, has served as Republican National Committeewoman for MI, and board member for the Foundation for Excellence in Education, according to U.S. News. Despite this, Trump announced on November 23 that Betsy DeVos would be his choice for Secretary of Education. Or, more precisely, a single Republican vote.

Anti-public school activist Betsy DeVos is one of the few Trump cabinet nominees who may not be confirmed.

DeVos underwent tense questioning during her confirmation hearing with the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions in January and a confirmation vote in the full Senate was originally scheduled for Tuesday. Their decision puts Ms DeVos one defection away from losing the 50 votes needed to confirm her nomination. "I can not support this nominee".

Public opposition to DeVos is unusually fierce, said Mary Kusler, lobbyist for the National Education Association, a large union that said constituents sent 1 million emails and placed 40,000 calls to senators decrying the nomination.

DeVos's vision for public education includes religious academies; charter schools with for-profit management companies, including fully online operators; and specialized public schools. Rather, Mrs. DeVos is a billionaire donor who has spent her fortune on the campaigns of Republican politicians and on advancing her unsafe ideologies.

"I think that the games being played with Betsy DeVos are sad", he said. "I will not, I can not vote, to confirm her as our nation's next secretary of education". "She's never worked in a public school". DeVos is a big-time advocate for vouchers and other forms of choice. It's time for change and I believe Mrs. DeVos will be an agent of change in our system.

On Tuesday, Murkowski said she wanted to make sure that homeless students and other disadvantaged groups were served appropriately by their schools, and was still trying to determine whether DeVos would ensure these students were protected.
