  • Businessman Vincent Viola arrives at Trump Tower for meetings with President-elect Donald Trump

Nearly two months after President Donald Trump nominated Vincent Viola for the Secretary of the Army position, the owner of the Florida Panthers has withdrawn his name from consideration.

In a statement, Viola, a West Point graduate, said overcoming the ethical conflicts had "proven insurmountable".

"I appreciate the confidence President Trump showed in me", Viola said in a statement released to Military Times.

A CNN report from earlier this month said that Secretary of Defense James Mattis clashed with the Trump transition team over the president picking Viola without seeking his input first. Viola has always been involved with philanthropic projects and is a former victor of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Associated Press added.

The Military Times is reporting he withdrew due to his inability to separate himself from his business ties.

Viola pulled his name from consideration before he would undergo the confirmation process by the U.S. Senate. The 60-year-old businessman is a former chairman of the New York Mercantile Exchange and was serving in that role during the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

President Trump tapped Viola in mid-December.

Viola has a number of properties, including the NHL's Florida Panthers. He trained as an Airborne Ranger infantry officer and served in the 101st Airborne Division.

On their own, the Violas' top runners include Grade 1 winners Photo Call and Sweet Loretta and Grade 2 victor Nonna Mela.
