"Dripping" may expose users to toxic chemicals

This substitute to normal vaping results in more smoke and better flavour but also a stronger hit of nicotine, which may be potentially harmful.

One in four teens who vape say they've used e-cigarettes for an alternative technique known as "dripping", new research finds.

"This study is the first systematic evaluation of the use of dripping among teens", said Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, a professor in the department of psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine and the lead author of the study.

They come just two months after the US surgeon general called e-cigarettes a public health threat for youths.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that people use in lieu of tobacco cigarettes. Normally, you'd use the e-cigarette's mouthpiece to inhale the nicotine vapor.

Sixty-four per cent of the teens admitted they tried dripping to get thicker clouds of vapour so they could pull off smoke tricks. The study did not assess if the students added nicotine to the e-liquids used for dripping, or how frequently e-cigarettes were used for dripping, Science Daily reported.

Bottles of E-Juice that is used in E-Cigarettes or vaporizers are displayed at Digital Ciggz on January 28, 2015 in San Rafael, California.

He also laid out a rough timeline for the massive project, saying he hoped the wall would be completed within the next two years. When he got a cold call from the Trump transition team, Kelly and his wife had no reservations.

"E-liquids also contain many flavor chemicals such as aldehydes, vanillins and alcohols which are considered safe for ingestion, but little is known about the toxicity of inhaling these chemicals, especially when they are volatilized at high temperatures", Krishnan-Sarin said.

Krishnan-Sarin and her colleagues surveyed teens from eight southeastern CT high schools during spring 2015.

The study didn't examine what flavors teens used for dripping or assess how much nicotine might be in the liquids adolescents used, the authors note.

They recommended more research into whether it's more risky for kids, and experts said parents should ask their kids if they've tried it.

Health officials say doing this could increase the levels of toxins and carcinogens created when the liquid in e-cigarettes is vaporized at high temperatures.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced its intention to regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products, but hasn't yet rolled out its new rules. White, male teens were most likely to use e-cigs for dripping, according to the study published online in the February 6 edition of the journal Pediatrics.

Newer e-cigarette devices make dripping unnecessary, Polosa said.
