Boeing Wins $13.8 Billion Singapore Order For 777-9s, 787-10s

The carrier said it had signed a letter of intent with the USA manufacturer for 20 of its 777-9s and 19 of its 787-10s, with options for six more of each aircraft, bringing the total to 51 if exercised.

SIA has selected the 777X and additional 787-10s to expand its future widebody fleet. The first 777-9 jet will arrive in the company's fiscal year that starts April 2021.

Singapore Airlines - considered one of the world's most luxurious carriers - has been named in unofficial reports as the first recipient of Boeing's 787-10, to be delivered during the first half of 2018.

When the actual deal is inked, it will be SIA's biggest aircraft order since May 2013, when it announced a US$17 billion order for 60 aircraft. SIA regional subsidiary SilkAir holds a firm order for 37 Boeing 737 Max 8s, while SIA long-haul, low-fare unit Scoot holds an order eight 787-8/9s and SIA budget carrier Tigerair holds an order with Airbus for 39 A320neos. There now i 149 orders for the 787-10, which is expected to begin test flights in the coming weeks.

Thursday's announcement is in addition to the state-owned airline's previous order for 30 787-10s - the largest and most fuel efficient member of the Dreamliner family. It joins the baseline 787-8 which entered revenue service in 2011 and the 787-9, which entered service in 2015.
