Eclipse, full moon and comet to light up the sky tonight

11 February, 2017, 00:50 | Author: Kristopher Anderson

The spectacle should be visible across Ireland, as well as most of North and South America, Europe, Africa and most of Asia. This one also happens to be called the Hunger Moon because the winter weather was often extreme and made hunting impossible, so people would struggle to find food and starve at this time of the year.

On Friday night, the "snow" full moon, the comet 45P and a penumbral lunar eclipse are all expected to make appearances.

Stargazers will have to fearless sub-zero temperatures in order to witness tonight's lunar eclipse, which will see the moon turn darker than normal and reddish in colour.

The outer shadow of the Earth blocks part - but not all - of the sun's rays from reaching the moon, making it appear slightly darker than usual.

"Well the moon is nearly going to go into the Earth's shadow".

Brian Kremer with Tyler junior College's Center for Earth and Space Science Education says there's a pretty good show happening Friday night, and best of all it's free.

A lunar eclipse takes places when the sun, Earth and moon are aligned with the earth in the middle. However, we won't see it until the moon rises in the eastern sky at 5:27 p.m. The best time to look for the Comet will be at 3 a.m. Saturday morning. By 9:55 p.m. EST (0255 GMT), the Moon will be ttally out of the penumbral shadow. Most of North America will be able to see the lunar event at moonrise, while areas farthest to the east including ME will be able to view the entire eclipse as the moon makes its way across the sky.

The green comet, which visits our neck of the solar system every five years, will whiz within 7.7 million miles of Earth at a speedy clip of about 14.2 miles per second. You'll need a pair of binoculars or a telescope if you want to catch a glimpse.
