"President Trump agreed, at the request of President Xi, to honor our "one China" policy," the statement said, referring to Washington's long-time recognition of Taiwan as part of China.
According to the Financial Times, which was the first to report on the call, Trump told Xi that the United States would respect its long-standing "One China" policy (distinct from China's own "One China" principle). As an incoming president, having diplomatic relations with Taiwan was taken as an implicit break with the "one China" policy.
During the call on Friday, the two leaders also agreed to keep close contact and said they expected to meet each other at an early date, China Central Television reported.
The policybegan in 1979, when the United States under President Jimmy Carter first established a diplomatic relationship with China and severed its then-official relationship with Taiwan. It was the first conversation between a US president or president-elect and a Taiwanese leader since Washington and Beijing established diplomatic relations in 1979.
"We highly appreciate President Trump's holiday greetings to President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people", Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Lu Kang said Thursday.
Trump added that he "looks forward to working with President Xi to develop a constructive relationship that benefits both the United States and China".
