Following a tragic accident in which a 10-year-old child was killed, Topshop has recalled the display units involved.

The Topshop store in Reading's Oracle shopping centre was closed on Tuesday as police investigated.

In a statement the force said the child "suffered serious head injuries after an incident involving a store display barrier".

Eyewitnesses said that he pulled down a barrier in the fashion store, causing the furniture to crash down onto his head.

The Topshop store on the upper level of the Oracle Centre is still cordoned off.

The boy was treated at the scene for a critical head injury before being rushed to the Royal Berkshire Hospital where he died shortly after. Police are treating the death as unexplained but not suspicious.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said: " We received the call at 4.12pm to reports of a 10-year-old boy who was suffering a seirous medical emergency.

"Detectives are now working with the local authority and the store owners to gather all of the information on how this incident happened".

A unsigned card left outside the store read: "RIP little man".

Topshop said its board and staff were "deeply saddened" by the "horrific" accident and that their thoughts are with the family.
