  • Mark Zuckerberg lauds Narendra Modi for connecting with people via Facebook

"In recent campaigns around the world - from India and Indonesia across Europe to the United States - we've seen the candidate with the largest and most engaged following on Facebook usually wins", Zuckerberg wrote, highlighting a phenomenon that India knows all too well.

Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday laid out a vision for Facebook to help address the world's challenges and opportunities by building a "global community" at a time there is a rising backlash against globalization.

In his note, Zuckerberg argued for a global response to the issues of our day.

"There are questions about whether we can make a global community that works for everyone, and whether the path ahead is to connect more or reverse course", he wrote.

"I think the reality is that over the long term that will be true, and there are pieces of infrastructure that we can build to make sure that a global community works for everyone".

Writing under the head "Informed Community", Zuckerberg acknowledges the problem of fake news and its dissemination through Facebook, but stops short of providing a solution. At a moment when Facebook is getting blamed for partisan rancor and the propagation of made-up news, it repositions the company as a torch-carrier for the ideal of global interdependence (Steven Levy in Backchannel).

"History is the story of how we've learned to come together in ever greater numbers-from tribes to cities to nations", he explains. 'Our approach will focus less on banning misinformation, and more on surfacing additional perspectives and information, including that fact checkers dispute an item's accuracy, ' he writes.

Having spent a decade focusing on connecting individuals, the chief executive says that Facebook is now shifting its focus to "developing the social infrastructure for community - for supporting us, for keeping us safe, for informing us, for civic engagement, and for inclusion of all".

According to the Facebook founder, the News Feed AI is using a new signal that indicates whether people actually read an article they are sharing.

"There are many of us who stand for bringing people together and connecting the world".

The earlier version included Zuckerberg's belief that artificial intelligence could eventually be used to monitor private messages by terrorists who are planning an attack. "It will take many years to develop these systems".

One area where Zuckerberg wrote that Facebook would do better would be suggesting "meaningful communities". Zuckerberg also stressed on the need for the online bonding or camaraderie that people share online should also reflect in the physical world.

However, Zuckerberg stayed away from making any direct reference to US President Donald Trump's stance on cross-border movement of people or Brexit.

"Zuckerberg has had enormous success based on what I called simple social engineering", said Gottheil.
