New US immigrant ban to be better prepared: Kelly

A new version of a Trump administration travel ban will be "streamlined", U.S. Secretary for Homeland Security John Kelly said on Saturday.

"The President is contemplating releasing a tighter, more streamlined version of the first [order]", Kelly said at the conference.

"We will have this time the opportunity. of input on the rollout plan, in particular that no one's caught in the system coming overseas to our airports", Kelly said.

The secretary of the Department of Homeland Security also said green card residency holders or travelers already on planes will not be blocked.

The memos would also allow authorities to criminally prosecute parents who are undocumented immigrants if they paid smugglers to bring their children to the United States.

As part of Trump's original order, citizens from seven countries - Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen - were not allowed to enter the country for 90 days.

"I can tell you right now they're not very reliable", he said of the seven Muslim-majority countries the administration deems terrorism threats that were listed on the initial, temporary travel ban.

The president said Thursday that he would announce a new, revised executive order on immigration during the coming week.

A tougher approach to asylum seekers would be an element of President Donald Trump's promise to crack down on immigration and tighten border security, a cornerstone of his election campaign and a top priority of his first month in office.

In line with Trump's executive order, one draft memo directs the hiring of 5,000 additional Border Patrol agents and 500 "Air &Marine Agents/Officers". A federal judge in Virginia recently cited those comments in a forceful order declaring that the ban should be put on hold. For others, he said, "we will have a short phase-in period to make sure that people on the other end don't get on airplanes".

US homeland security officials denied entry to least 141 people in the week after Trump issued his executive order, according to a federal court document filed last week. Already, 24 individuals who were turned back at airports have since returned, and 14 denied entry at land border points have been admitted.

The abrupt implementation of the ban, which was enforced just hours after it was signed, caught many officials and travelers unaware, leading to chaos and protests at global airports in the US and overseas. "The Trump administration is intent on inflicting cruelty on millions of immigrant families across the country".

"In so doing, the president will clear the way for immediately protecting the country rather than pursuing further potentially time-consuming litigation", the Justice Department said in its filing.

The expanded relationship with local law enforcement would be carried out through what is known as 287 (g) - a section on the federal Immigration and Nationality Act that allows DHS to deputize state and local law-enforcement officers so they can function as federal immigration agents.

While campaigning for the presidency previous year, Trump originally supported banning all Muslims worldwide from entering the USA, but he later altered his plan to target countries with links to terrorism.
