John Oliver On Putin's Russian And 'Moral Equivalence' With The US

21 February, 2017, 01:01 | Author: Sam Montgomery

Last week, "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" spent most of its energy focusing on the nature of truth - it was a little bit of an abstract concept, but there was a great deal to discuss there when it comes to everything from "alternative facts" to the spread of inaccurate media. To which Trump now famously responded, "You think our country's so innocent?"

As Oliver explains, Putin's track record on human rights violations is extensive.

While there is so much about Trump to be covered at the moment, show host John Oliver, decidedly took a detour in yesterday's show while staying connected to the USA president.

"Today, on behalf of President Trump, I bring you this assurance: The United States of America strongly supports North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and will be unwavering in our commitment to this transatlantic alliance", Pence said at the Munich Security Conference.

It is anxious the president will not have the political power to improve relations with Russian Federation, as he has indicated he might try to do, and even, perhaps, lift some USA sanctions.

And yet there's plenty that we do know.

"You've been objectively nicer to Vladimir Putin than you have to Meryl Streep". "Never try for a better word because it doesn't exist".

"Very serious preparatory work is going on in the Kremlin, including a paper - seven pages - describing a psychological portrait of Trump, especially based on this last two to three months, and the last weeks", added Fedorov, who said he had known Trump since the turn of the century. That's not exactly the step toward world peace you're probably hoping for. Oliver then vowed to stick up for America since Trump won't: "America and Russian Federation are not the f*cking same".

"Don't get me wrong: America has had, and continues to have, endemic problems that need fixing; that might as well be the title of this show", Oliver continued. Them, good vs. evil Cold War propaganda promotion. Instead, John Oliver broke down why he thinks Putin is such a risky figure and why considering the US and Russian Federation morally equivalent is harmful.

To drive home the point, Oliver wrapped up the segment with a warning for Trump in "the catchiest possible form: shitty techno music".
