Trump said retired Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, who had been his acting adviser, would serve as the National Security Council chief of staff.

President Donald Trump, right, shakes hands with Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, left, at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., Monday.

"He is a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience", Mr Trump told reporters as Lt-Gen McMaster, wearing his uniform, sat next to him. "I watched and read a lot over the last two days".

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said this week McMaster will continue to be on active duty while serving as national security adviser.

Senators may agitate for an opportunity to let the committee grill McMaster given the controversy surrounding Flynn's departure and allegations from the intelligence community that Russian Federation intervened in the US elections to help Trump win.

Flynn's ouster came after reports emerged that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about his discussions in December with the Russian ambassador to the us about impending sanctions by the Obama administration over its conclusion that Russia had meddled in the election.

The National Security Council has not adjusted smoothly to Trump's leadership. He has also written articles questioning the planning for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. "He knows how to succeed, ' McCain said in a statement, adding, 'I give President Trump great credit for this decision'".

The 54-year-old army officer is known for his criticism of the USA military's handling of the Vietnam War, as well as his own service as a commander in northern Iraq in 2005.

McMaster is the kind of Washington, D.C., outsider that Trump promised to bring along with him as he entered into politics for the first time. Stavridis also mentioned McMaster's book, "Dereliction of Duty" - a searing case study of the weakness of military leaders in opposing the Vietnam War - as the seminal book on the importance of "speaking truth to power". McMaster as national security adviser.

McMaster, 54, intends to remain on active duty while he serves on Trump's senior team. When McMaster was a colonel, he led a Fort Carson unit of more than 5,000 soldiers through one of the post's successful deployments to Iraq.

McMaster, who has been described as a "blunt-spoken bulldog", joins Defense Secretary James Mattis, whose nickname is "Mad Dog", and Homeland Security head John Kelly, a "no-nonsense pragmatist", as one-time generals who have signed up to work in the Trump administration.

"I have had the honor of knowing him for many years, and he is a man of genuine intellect, character, and ability".

His experience fighting insurgents in Iraq's Tal Afar district is likely to be useful as U.S. and allied forces attempt to retake nearby Mosul from the Islamic State group.
