Microsoft launches Skype Lite in India

The new app also takes advantage of the India Stack, a bunch of APIs that allow governments and businesses to make their services available securely to Indian citizens.

"Skill India" was a plan orchestrated by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

Skype Lite offers features like reduced size, instant messaging, audio and video calls.

BotsThe app is also introducing chatbot into the mainframe of the app, which seems to be a helpful addition.

"Skype Lite" has an integrated camera app with it and added fun bots with a conversational interface that runs on Microsoft's AI technology. The company assured that it deletes all the Aadhaar data once the call has been disconnected.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the kind of IT infrastructure India has built and the artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that are now available enable the country to build "India-scale" applications that can dramatically improve the quality and reach of education, healthcare, credit and more. The project aims to connect the skill learning programmes directly with relevant jobs, by leveraging the power of LinkedIn's extensive job search platform. However, the project is still in private preview mode. The platform is said to combine Microsoft's cloud, video and other technologies with LinkedIn's assets, and will also allow any training content provider to offer their courses over the cloud. The tool promises to be less taxing on a smartphone's battery compared to the regular app by compressing large photos and videos.

Microsoft has launched a new lighter version of the Skype app that will work on poor Internet connections and low-end Android smartphones. Also, the new app is created to run on old or low-end Android devices without consuming too much memory or processing power.

Nadella said it will ensure Microsoft services support Aadhaar both for business-to-business and consumer services.

The Director of product management at Skype, Eugene Ho said, "Skype helps people bring them closer together".

Government servicesThe Aadhaar scheme, which is the collection of India's new proprietary identity system, can be accessed via the app.

Nilekani, who was chairman of UIDAI (which built Aadhaar) and who has been involved in building some of the other parts of the infrastructure - collectively called "India stack" - said unless people see technology materially improving their living standards, there could be a backlash against it from society, "like we see in the U.S. now" (a reference to Donald Trump's victory).
