John Lewis is to cut 387 jobs as part of its efforts to limit costs as the retail sector prepares for a more hard year.

British retailer John Lewis (LON:BD32) has announced plans to cut nearly 800 jobs from the store's cafes and administration. The move could lead to almost 400 fewer jobs for staff in the company's carpet, curtain and blinds fittings service, as well as home estimating and fitting administration support and catering.

Some of the staff who enter the consultation could be re-deployed to the new positions.

In its home estimation and fitting services, it is proposing to move to a regional model for our curtains, blinds and floor covering which it said would allow the group to broaden its services and increase flexibility.

The company is also proposing to create a central "Customer Administration Hub" to deal with all customer orders, replacing individual branch management teams. At the end of the process about 387 roles will go. "We understand that for some this will mean a period of change, and we are working with affected partners over the consultation period to give opportunities for redeployment in new roles wherever possible", he added.

The changes come amid falling profits at the store.

It's not the only major cutback announced by John Lewis in recent times - in March 2016, the department store giant shut several staff canteens and imposed longer shifts on delivery drivers.

No jobs will be cut among the estimators and fitters.

Within catering, the retailer aims to extend the catering model to use a centrally created menu which requires less "on-site" preparation.

'This new model will enable us to change our menu more regularly to keep up with trends, more easily meet the dietary requirements of customers, and give a more consistent offering across all of our shops, ' the retailer said.

Dino Rocos, John Lewis operations director, said the move would adapt the business to the changing needs of customers amid "a backdrop of structural changes in the retail industry".

More than 40% of sales at John Lewis over Christmas were online.
