Today is the warmest February day ever recorded in Boston

25 Февраля, 2017, 00:40 | Author: Priscilla Morrison

The mercury officially soared to 71 degrees between about 1 p.m. and 1:15 p.m., breaking the previous record for February 24 by four degrees.

Lucerne wasn't far behind with 19.9 degrees, Zurich reached 19.5 and Bern set a new city record for February with 18.5 degrees.

That comes after last Sunday tied the record high for its date at 61 degrees, and as the weather service predicts more warmth that will end suddenly Saturday evening.

Bill Simpson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton, Massachusetts, said that's not exactly true.

The cities of Nyon, Sion, Aigle and Neuchâtel all broke their previous February records. "Records go back to 1872, according to the National Weather Service".

The early spring that's sweeping across the eastern two-thirds of the country may not be unprecedented, but the temperature records it's breaking suggest this prolonged February heat wave is truly something remarkable. Saturday will still remain on the mild side ahead of a cold front that slides in for the second half of the weekend. Besides Feb. 26, 2000, the other day was Feb. 21, 1997 when it reached a high of 70 degrees.

The previous record was set in 1985, when temperatures in Worcester hit 67 degrees.
