Steelers use franchise tag on Le'Veon Bell

28 February, 2017, 00:54 | Author: Felix Jensen

Shortly after the news broke, Brown tweeted a photo of himself with agent Drew Rosenhaus indicating that the deal was signed.

Running back Le'Veon Bell's path to free agency was blocked by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday.

The first year of Brown's new deal replaces the final year of his previous one, meaning that he's under contract through the 2021 season. The four-year veteran had an outstanding season in 2016.

Le'Veon Bell can only play for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017. He finished the 2016 campaign second in the National Football League in receptions (106), tied for second in touchdown catches (12) and fifth in receiving yards (1,284).

Bell earned his second Pro Bowl selection and was named the Steelers' Most Valuable Player following in 2016, a season in which he became the first player in National Football League history to average at least 100 rushing and 50 receiving yards per game in a single-season. That puts Brown's salary at more than $15 million. According to reports, the Steelers could finalize a long-term agreement with Brown during the NFL Scouting Combine this week. He also set postseason single-game rushing records in the first two round of the playoffs and caught 75 passes for 616 yards.

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said a fortnight ago that he wants Bell to retire as a member of the Steelers.

The Steelers haven't used the franchise tag often, and the last player who received the franchise tag was none other than placekicker Jeff Reed. He'll surpass A.J. Green into that top spot.
