Nigeria Senate wants ties with SA re-assessed

No fewer than 97 Nigerians have been deported from South Africa over alleged civil and criminal offences committed lately.The Guardian learnt that at least six of the deportees were returned into the country for alleged drug offences, 10 were arrested and deported for alleged criminal offences while others reportedly committed immigration offences in their host country.

Some Nigerians have demanded that South Africans leave their country.

Ghana's mission in Pretoria also said on Monday that they had rescued some 18 nationals from the attacks after they placed calls to the mission.

"The Senators also resolved to urge the Federal Government to reconsider the Country's diplomatic ties with South Africa if the ugly incidents are not urgently halted by the South African government", Senate spokesman, Charles Akpan, said.

"A shop belonging to a Nigerian was affected".

According to her, available information showed that there was no record that any life was lost in the recent xenophobic attacks which began on February 18.

The chairperson of the committee on foreign affairs, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, said it was time for Nigeria to impose sanctions on South Africa, adding that Nigeria should also consider retaliatory moves against the southern African country.
