  • Ed Sheeran is gearing up to make a splash with his upcoming album Divide on the same day Lorde is due to release

In the video, which was directed by Grant Singer, Lorde is rocking a sexy pink cocktail dress as she paints the town, well, pink. Four years after her debut, Pure Heroine, the first single was teased out in the form of projected installations in New Zealand and NY leading up to a video and single release today for the track "Green Light".

Working with musician Jack Antonoff, Lorde said the album took 18 months to complete. It's definitely not a rip-off - Lorde is her own wholly original person, and "Green Light" reflects that - but both songs address heartache, fall under the umbrella of dance pop, and include the same sort of dazzling '80s synths.

Speaking of the song, the singer told ZM's Fletch, Vaughan and Megan: "It's totally a song about heartbreak".

Lorde signed to a label at age 13 and released her first album at age 16.

"She thinks you love the beach, you're such a damn liar", Lorde sings on the song.

We give this song the green light!

Her first album, Pure Heroine, was released in 2013 and she last put out a single two years ago when she featured on the Disclosure track Magnets in 2015.

The upbeat track is a distinctly new sound for the 20-year-old, one that she described as "very different and kind of unexpected" in a series of tweets on Thursday.

'I knew I couldn't make the same thing again, and I had to figure out what it was that I wanted to say.

Let it all the way out, girl; we're ready for it - and need to hear it just as badly.

A second teaser was released yesterday showing Lorde walking alongside a chain-link fence, with city lights visible behind her. "Green Light" pulls off a trick similar to "Royals" with the way it feels at once in conversation and a little apart from everything else on the radio right now - immediate but still forward-thinking.
