New US soccer policy requires players to stand during national anthems

US Soccer unveiled a new policy Saturday requiring players to stand during the national anthems during global matches - six months after Megan Rapinoe kneeled before a women's friendly against Thailand.

The change comes in the wake of the controversy kicked off by National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who chose not to stand for the anthem last season.

The change comes after Megan Rapinoe kneeled before a US women's senior team friendly against Thailand in September.

Rapinoe chose to kneel to protest against social inequality. She also protested with her club team, the Seattle Reign, several times in the fall.

Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated reported U.S. Soccer opted against a formal punishment for Rapinoe after stating there could be repercussions following the first instance ahead of the Thailand match.

Rapinoe made a decision to kneel in a protest of social inequality.

Per Holden, U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said there will be no set punishment for not standing during the anthems, and that each violation will be addressed as it happens.

"Representing your country is a privilege and honor for any player or coach that is associated with U.S. Soccer's National Teams".
