  • Commonwealth Games sprinting towards new 2022 host, says Kiwi Games boss

Cape Town - Durban has lost the right to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, according to widespread reports on Monday.

Only last month sports minister Fikile Mbalula appeared to pre-empt the withdrawal revealing that the government had failed to come to an agreement with the Commonwealth Games Federation over bankrolling the event.

There has been speculation since late past year that Durban may lose Games after the organizing Committee missed various financial and planning deadlines set out by the CGF.

Gold Coast will host in 2018 but she said it was unlikely the same city would go back-to-back.

"There's a real sense of sadness and the (Commonwealth Games) federation gave Durban and South Africa a reasonable amount of time to honour commitments, but sadly things have changed politically and economically", Smith said.

The Commonwealth Games began as the British Empire Games in 1930.

With BJP support, Sena's Mahadeshwar elected Mayor
The announcement comes days after the Shiv Sena won by a margin of 2 against the BJP's 82 in the recently concluded BMC elections. Shiv Sena's Vishwanath Mahadeshwar has been elected as the next Mayor of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today.

"It does not look like we will find each other", said Mbalula.

A new host city is now being sought.

Durban won the bid for the Games unopposed in September 2015 after Edmonton dropped its campaign to host when falling oil prices caused the Canadian city to refocus its financial commitments.

CGF President Martin noted, "Launching the Queen's Baton Relay on Commonwealth Day at Buckingham Palace is a fitting start to an inclusive and inspiring community relay that connects our diverse Commonwealth in celebration and anticipation of the next Games".

Singer-songwriter Cody Simpson, who hails from the Gold Coast, performed at Monday's ceremony.
