Protests Rock Ferguson, Mo., After New Footage of Michael Brown Emerges

  • Filmmaker Jason Pollock has released a new documentary telling what he says is the true story behind Michael Brown's shooting death in August 2014

Almost 100 people gathered outside the Ferguson Market and Liquor Store where Brown was shot dead on August 9, 2014 to demand justice, angered by new revelations uncovered in the documentary, which suggested Brown had not robbed the store - a fact that had been peddled by police to justify Brown's fatal encounter with then-Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson.

Police believe people gathered at the market because of the release of the documentary "Stranger Fruit".

When 18-year-old Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014, police officers shared a video showing Brown with his hands around a shopkeeper's neck as he makes off with a carton of cigarillos.

More than two years after the shooting of black teen Michael Brown ignited the Black Lives Matter movement, new video from the convenience store Brown had allegedly robbed is shifting the narrative of what happened that night.

In the footage, Brown appears to be giving a small bag, purportedly containing marijuana to the employees who give him two boxes of cigarillos in return. Investigators have previously said officer Darren Wilson initially stopped Brown for walking in the street, not because the store reported a robbery. Brown is then seen leaving the store with the sack but turns around to hand the cigarillos back before exiting.

The filmmaker suggests the video proves Brown wasn't robbing the store, but rather, retrieving the cigarillos the clerks gave him hours before. "They didn't take the marijuana...maybe Michael Brown thought they would trade him cigarillos, but they didn't".

Filmmaker Jason Pollock included the footage in his new documentary Strange Fruit, which premiered Saturday at SXSW. Wilson was acquitted of all wrongdoing in Brown's case. Former Ferguson police chief Tom Jackson told the Post-Dispatch that he had not previously seen the video. "Ferguson PD released the video of Michael Brown committing a strong armed robbery".

During the press conference, McCulloch said the surveillance video was not new information and was mentioned in the report that was released on November 24, 2014, the night the grand jury returned its decision not to indict Darren Wilson. It's when he comes back for the cigarillos that something goes other than planned, but it nearly certainly proves that while his transaction wasn't legal, he did not rob the convenience store.

Kanzler said the video used in the documentary was edited. Houck shot back sarcastically. Belmar said his department focused on investigating the shooting, not the incident at the store.

As Brown attempts to leave with the box of cigarillos, Patel come from around the counter, charging Brown, attempting to collect payment. "The reason he gave it back is he was walking out the door with unpaid merchandise and they wanted it back", he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

However, Jay Kanzler, a lawyer for the convenience store and its employees, said that the video is unrelated to the later events. A civil trial is scheduled to start next year.
