  • SC allows Goa swearing-in, orders Thursday floor test

Finance minister Arun Jaitley has justified Goa governor Mridula Sinha's decision to invite a coalition led by the BJP instead of the Congress, the largest party, to form the ministry in the state.

Digvijay Singh could not find a solution to conflicting claims of the CM candidates as extra support that the party needed to form Government was made conditional on who would be chief minister.

Three MLAs of the Goa Forward Party, three of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and two Independents have pledged their support to Parrikar.

Stating that Congress' fight is against Bharatiya Janata Party's ideology, Rahul said, "What they did in Manipur and Goa is exactly the ideology we are fighting against".

When Chief Minister Ibobi Singh sees the results of the Manipur Assembly elections, he'll know more than anyone else that his gamble didn't pay off - the one he took late previous year when he carved out new districts in the state. "It has to be forthwith", it said while directing all constitutional authorities including the Election Commission to complete the formalities by Wednesday to have the floor test on Thursday at 11 am.

BJP, which won 21 seats in the assembly elections held earlier this month, achieved the vaunted 31-seat mark earlier in the day with the support of its ally Naga People's Front (NPF) (4 seats), and the NPP (4 seats), LJP (1) and one Independent.

He will be sworn-in at Raj Bhavan at 10.30 a.m., the sources said. However, Congress MLA Thounaojam Shyam Kumar, who has reportedly joined the BJP, was conspicuous by his absence.

Despite winning the most number of seats in both the states - 28 in 60-member Manipur Assembly and 17 in 40-member Goa Assembly - the Congress failed to form government in any of the states.

The Supreme Court said BJP leader and former defense minister Manohar Parrikar can take the oath of office as planned on Tuesday evening.

Mr Parrikar exuded confidence that the BJP would prove its majority on the floor of the House on March 16.

Congress leader in the House Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that democracy is being murdered. "The mandate of the people of Goa and Manipur has been stolen by the BJP". Parrikar will replace incumbent Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar.

Note: Manipur and Goa have been marked in red because at the time of writing, no party was in a position to form the government.

Asked about suggestions that Gandhi was not the leader the Congress was looking for, Chaturvedi said: "I have to observe some constraints and restraints".
