  • Opener Tom Latham will have happy memories of the Basin Reserve after scoring 177 against Bangladesh in the January test

Off-spinner Piedt‚ who played the most recent of his seven tests against New Zealand in Centurion in August‚ will join the squad at the weekend‚ visa permitting.

The captain who wins the toss is expected to bowl, which puts the odds in South Africa's favor after they called correctly in all five One-Day Internationals and the first Test.

Following an unfortunate draw in the opening Test at the University Oval in Dunedin, hosts New Zealand get set to face off against the might visitors South Africa on Day 1 of the second of the three-Test series at the Basin Reserve Ground in Wellington on Wednesday. Tim Southee returns to the New Zealand lineup and replaces Trent Boult who is sidelined with a leg injury.

"There's a couple of question marks round a couple of players but I can confirm I come in for Trent and Neil Broom comes in for Rosco (Taylor)".

Colin de Grandhomme also rejoins the team in place of Mitchell Santner, lengthening New Zealand's batting order.

Also in Patel's favour was having claimed Quinton de Kock's wicket in his past four innings, although du Plessis said the prodigious young gloveman did not consider himself Patel's bunny. "He's a guy who's not scared of a challenge", du Plessis said. "We're looking at possibly, maybe, one but highly unlikely", he said.

"I said before the series that if we can get rid of Williamson and Taylor there's a lot of pressure on the rest of the batting lineup", du Plessis said.

This has meant going into a Test with only two frontline seamers.
