Six members of a BBC team of journalists were among the injured Thursday after Mount Etna, a volcano in Sicily, began to erupt, sending boiling hot rocks flying into the air.

It was a scary moment for some 35 tourists and others, including a British television TV crew, who were caught in an explosion on Mount Etna that left ten of them hurt.

The BBC crew was shaken but physically OK despite having suffered cuts, bruises and burns, she wrote.

Several tourists have been injured as Mount Etna erupted for the third time in just under three weeks, spitting molten lava almost 650 feet into the sky above Sicily.

"There were 10 injuries", he said.

She added that a "huge explosion" caused rocks and steam to be pelted at the group.

Mount Etna is one of the world's most active volcanoes, according to the US Geological Survey. "Volcanologist said most unsafe incident experience in his 30 year career", Morelle tweeted.

Volcanologist Boris Behncke, part of the expedition, also received minor injuries to his head during what he described as a "violent explosion".

Thursday's explosion was the result of a so-called phreatomagmatic eruption, caused by magma hitting water - in this case snow.

But as the BBC's Morelle observed on Twitter, Thursday's event served as a "reminder of how unsafe and unpredictable volcanoes can be".

Mount Etna is on the east coast of Sicily.

Europe's largest and most active volcano, experienced an increase in volcanic activity just two weeks after its most recent eruption.
