The children lost everything when their home on Dogwood Lane in Glen Carbon, Ill. caught fire Thursday morning.

Preliminary findings from the autopsy indicate Justin Campbell died in his home from a gunshot wound to the head.

Lakin lauded Zobrist as a "hero", saying he swam out 50 to 75 feet into the lake, did a sweep of the auto and found the three-month-old baby floating inside the vehicle with about six or eight inches of air space. Paramedic Todd Zobrist pulled the boy's lifeless body out of the SUV and used the roof of the vehicle as a surface to perform CPR.

A baby found inside an SUV submerged in a lake near St. Louis is expected to recover, thanks to the fast actions of a passing motorist and a paramedic.

Authorities say the baby was the only occupant found in the vehicle that went into Silver Lake around 6 a.m. Thursday in Highland, Illinois, about 30 miles east of St. Louis. An adult died in the fire, but six children, siblings up to age 14, escaped.

The Edwardsville community is hosting a donation drive to help the family.

Volunteers are also considering starting a college fund for the children.

Around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, authorities received a call about a vehicle with headlights on driving into Silver Lake in Madison County. Several ran to Walmart to call 911; others went to a neighbor's house.

The chain of events began around 5:30 a.m. Thursday when fire broke out at a home owned by Cristy Lynn Campbell in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

It was initially unclear if the two deadly incidents were related.

Cristy Campbell was found dead in her SUV that crashed into the lake.

Campbell's body, which was found about 400 feet from the SUV, was pulled from the lake around 11:15 a.m. Thursday.

Authorities were notified about 5:15 a.m. that a house in Glen Carbon was burning. Four of the children, the smallest carrying what looked like a blanket, were seen fleeing past the camera in the direction of Walmart, where they sought help.

Cristy Campbell lived in the house. Her profile photo shows her swimming with a dolphin.

"He has told me that I'm a no good wife", she wrote.

The neighbor, Sherry Ricker, told the newspaper that she saw Cristy Campbell and held her infant son just three days earlier.

Court records indicate Campbell and her husband had a troubled relationship, filing for divorce twice.

In 2005, Justin Campbell was charged with domestic abuse. She filed for legal separation in September 2010, but the matter was dismissed two months later.

A judge granted an emergency order of protection on April 25, 2012, and Cristy Campbell sued again for divorce.
