Vigilant EU to suspend imports involved in Brazil meat scandal

21 March, 2017, 00:56 | Author: Elaine Woods

Brazil's president, Michel Temer, met with dozens of ambassadors from countries that import Brazilian meat on Sunday (19 March) to reassure them the country's beef was safe. Some suggest this might signal that any ban may be only short-lived.

The claims appear to relate to discovery of frozen meat being used by a small value-adding company where use-by dates on product had expired. "What we have are containers there that can't leave the port to local markets".

Some of the meat ended up in lunches at public schools, police said at a press conference in Curitiba, Brazil.

According to media reports, the size of affected meat imports seemed to be small and the two sides were working to figure out the detailed amount and specific kinds of product to the European Union markets, said Brivio. Investigators also found evidence that some companies manipulated certificates on meat for export to Spain and Italy.

He pointed out that the raids affected just 21 meat packers out of nearly 5,000 in the country. "And only six of them have exported in the past 60 days", said Mr Temer.

Nearly all of the investigations were focussed on just one Brazilian state.

Shares of meatpackers BRF SA and JBS SA slumped on Monday after China and other countries temporarily suspended imports of Brazilian meat following a scandal over alleged bribery of inspectors. The investigation is focused on the actions of Brazilian Federal Meat Inspectors. The JBS marketing manager is an Egyptian.

He said: "FairPrice only carries meat products from AVA-accredited sources, which are assessed based on high food safety standards. We have complete confidence in our approach to food safety and product quality in Brazil, and in all of our operations around the world".

He said that of 4,837 companies in the sector, just 21 are under suspicion for adulterating their products and only about 30 of the country's 10,000 health inspection officials are implicated in the scheme.
