  • Twitter Transparency Report Details Escalating Crackdown On Terrorists

More than 62,000 Twitter accounts were shut down every month in the last half of 2016 because of links to terrorism.

The company reported Tuesday that it pulled down 376,890 terrorist-related accounts from July 2016 through December 2016. Twitter said 74% of extremist accounts were found by "internal, proprietary spam-fighting tools".

Government requests to pull down accounts for promoting terrorism only accounted for 2 percent of suspensions for that reason.

"Unless we are prevented from doing so, when we withhold content in a certain country Twitter will continue to provide a copy of the request to Lumen so anyone can see what type of content was removed and who made the request", the company said.

The social network has strict rules against the promotion of violence on its service. Twitter also fielded 412 "Emergency Disclosure Requests" - which are disclosure requests related to threats of terrorism or self-harm - from USA government bodies and provided information in 80% of those cases as well.

The latest suspensions bring the total number of blocked accounts to 636,248 from August 2015, when Twitter stepped up efforts to curb "violent extremism", the company announced as part of its latest transparency report.

Along with the new data and the latest reporting numbers for the second half of 2016, there are also a range of other updates across the report. Twitter's transparency reports have grown in scope over time to include more and more information.

While we're excited to have reached our 10th report, there is still plenty of work to be done.
