American NHL players may boycott World Championships to support USA women's team

Up until this point, most of the vocal support for the USWNT had come from fans and fellow women players, be it in hockey or soccer or basketball. They also said other forms of financial support ― for marketing, travel and youth development, among other things ― pales in comparison to what the federation provides men's teams. The men's team joining in the boycott would only further damage a reputation that hasn't been helped by debacles like this situation and the poor showing at the World Cup of Hockey past year. "It's my community as well, and they've definitely put on a show here this week", she said, adding the team was impressed with the show of support. The NHLPA panned USA Hockey's bid to stock the team with replacements, adding it "would only serve to make relations, now and in the future, much worse". He's showing himself as a true ally to the women's national team in doing so. "These elite athletes indeed deserve fairness and respect, and we hope you will be a leader on this issue as women continue to push for equality in athletics".

Requests for comment to USA Hockey were not immediately returned.

The American women declared earlier this month that they would boycott the world championships starting March 31 in MI unless they see some progress towards settling a wage dispute with USA Hockey. In fact, the team fielded by USA Hockey in the women's division has won six world titles, according to USA Today. The two sides have also hotly disputed just how much additional the players are asking for.

"Word circulating among NHL players that American players will refuse to play in men's World Championships in solidarity with the women", prominent hockey agent Allan Walsh tweeted on Sunday.

He's the only active National Hockey League head coach I've seen who has proactively announced his individual support for the team, and that's something that should be recognized and commended.

The NHLPA has already released a statement backing the efforts of the women's team. Whatever team USA Hockey might field instead - if it can field a team - would have no more than 48 hours to practice and prepare for as many as five games over the next eight days.

As Senators committed to gender equity in all realms of American life, we write to express our serious concern with allegations raised by members of the U.S. Women's National Hockey Team regarding USA Hockey's inequitable allocation of resources to the women's hockey program and unjust treatment of national team members. The men's world championships are set for early May in France and Germany. That, of course, would be a critical blow for USA Hockey.

Since NHL players make millions, there's no need for USA Hockey to kick in more money. The hockey world seems pretty clear in how it wants this to end at this point.
