The Australian Grand Prix weekend did not go to plan for home hero Daniel Ricciardo, who after crashing out of qualifying on Saturday was forced to retire from the race with engine related issues.

The scheduled start was aborted and cars did an extra formation lap because another of the drivers was not in place, but Ricciardo was still in the pits when the other 19 cars got the race underway.

The Red Bull mechanics eventually managed to get their driver out on track, but he was already two laps down on the leaders.

Out front, Hamilton topped Sebastian Vettel for pole, with Valtteri Bottas missing out on a front row grid slot by just three hundredths of a second.

"Don't get me wrong, it's been fun, but I feel bad for everyone, bad for the fans". Max was pushing Kimi hard all race, but we didn't have the pace of Vettel or Hamilton.

"Basically it just switched off and there was no procedure I could do to stay out there".

"On the plus side, I'm getting out of here", Ricciardo, who initially finished second in Melbourne in 2014 but was later disqualified for a fuel limit infringement, told reporters.

Ricciardo was clearly frustrated when he got out of his stalled vehicle on the warm-up lap, before hitching a ride to the pits in a support truck. "I'm sure that we can build on this over the coming races".

But when it was suggested to Red Bull team boss Christian Horner that this ruling had proved particularly costly for his squad because it had a more sophisticated device, he replied: "I don't believe so".

"The most frustrating thing was for all these things to happen at home", he said.

"I was really trying to keep the pressure on ... and got a bit lucky when Lewis came out (from his pit stop) in traffic". "I'll wake up tomorrow and be motivated to get ready for China".

After crashing in Saturday's qualifying session when he spun and hit a barrier during a routine corner, repairs to his Red Bull vehicle included a new gearbox, which incurs a five-spot sanction.

"I think the auto behaved quite a bit better in the race than in qualifying", Verstappen said. "We chose to put the mileage in and get the knowledge anyway".
