  • Transport minister A K Saseendran attending a press meet at PWD guest house in Kozhikode on Sunday

Kerala Transport Minister AK Saseendran has resigned from his post after charges of sexual harassment against him were brought up in the aftermath of an audio clip being aired on a local news channel.

Saseendran, a Nationalist Congress Party leader who represents Elathur constituency, however told reporters in Kozhikode that his resignation does not mean that he is guilty.

Only a few hours after the audio clip was released, the minister hurriedly called a press conference and announced his resignation.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, said he viewed the allegations "seriously". This is the second blow to the 10th month CPI (M)-led LDF government in Kerala after the resignation of Jayarajan over charges of nepotism for appointing two of his close relatives to top position in state PSUs.

Saseendran maintains that he has never behaved improperly with anyone.

"I have always upheld a political morality and principle that no one in the party will ever have to feel ashamed because of me", Saseendran said.

"In my understanding, I have not committed anything wrong. When the allegation came up, he wanted an enquiry into it and took a stand that it was not ethical to continue as minister when the probe is on", Vijayan said. "The report has shocked everyone", Chennithala told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram. Let the chief minister order a probe by any agency.

BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan hit out at the minister, saying all Keralites need to hang their heads in shame over the allegations.

Saseendran is the second minister to resign since the Left Democratic Front (LDF) took power in Kerala past year. Mr Vijayan said the minister had spoken to him.
