The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Donald Harvey, the nurse's aide responsible for at least 37 murders in Cincinnati and London, Kentucky, was hospitalized after being found in his cell with multiple injuries.

Donald Harvey, 64, who pleaded guilty to killing more than three dozen people at hospitals in OH and Kentucky in the 1970s and 1980s, was pronounced dead Thursday morning after suffering critical injuries inside his cell at the state prison in Toledo.

He was beaten after an unnamed person went into his cell, a patrol report said.

A relative of one of Harvey's victims tells The Associated Press it's a shame to hear that Harvey had died.

Harvey claimed he was trying to end his patients' suffering as he killed patients in Cincinnati and London, Kentucky, but prosecutors disagreed.

"I'm kind of sad to hear it".

"Most of the doctors would be so overworked", Harvey said.

Harvey told his former attorney the killings began in 1970 when was at Marymount Hospital in Kentucky.

He used arsenic and cyanide to poison a lot of them, often slipping it into food.

He agreed to a plea deal that allowed him to avoid the death penalty and was serving multiple life sentences.

He was ultimately caught by police after an autopsy of his final victim.

Harvey was sentenced in 1987 for the murders of 25 people, a lot of them at Cincinnati's Drake Hospital, according to a previous TIME report.

Former Hamilton County Prosecutor Arthur Ney Jr., who prosecuted the cases in Cincinnati, said Harvey was not a mercy killer. He said he used morphine, cyanide, arsenic and whatever he had on hand to kill patients.
