  • PV Sindhu to clash with Sung Ji Hyun in semi-final of India Open

P.V. Sindhu put up a dazzling display of attacking badminton to win her maiden India Open title beating Carolina Marin of Spain 21-19, 21-16, on Sunday night.

A valiant Sindhu had lost to Marin in a charged up final in Rio in August. Marin slowly found her feet on court and narrowed the gap. Out of the 10 occasions that both these superstars clashed, Sindhu has now won seven times. The China Open champion not only matched Marin for speed but grabbed the opportunities thanks to her quick movement on the net and the power she could generate from her jump smashes. None of this mattered to the capacity crowd, of course, who were cheering Sindhu in what they saw as a grudge match for the Olympic loss.

She gained an 8-6 lead with the help of six consecutive points and the momentum swung in favour of her. After the interval, the players stayed close and it looked like it could go anybody's way with Sindhu maintaining her composure to run away with the opening game.

After winning a closely contested first game, Sung found her feet in the second game to easily win several points and push the match into the decider.

"It was a very intense first game and it was crucial that I won it". Marin also won their most recent clash at the Premier Badminton League in January, a victory that does not officially count in their rivalry. There were no easy points, there were long rallies.

In the second game, the 21-year-old Indian was vying for the game point with a five-point advantage. Sindhu, however, had a two points lead, 11-9, going into the break, and the match was set to be a thriller. Sindhu leads 7-5, and she takes the shuttle early from the front court to win an important point to make it 8-6. "In the second, I could not play as well as she did". "It did not turn out to be a good match for me but I am happy that I have reached the finals", Marin said after the match.

The showpiece encounter in the men's doubles tournament also involved two teams from the same nation as Indonesia's Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo beat team-mates Ricky Karandasuwari and Angga Pratama 21-11, 21-15 in less than half an hour.
