South Korea allows soccer team to compete in North Korea

The United States wants China to prove it is really seeking to stop North Korea's nuclear testing with actions and President Donald Trump will be pressing Chinese President Xi Jinping on that when they meet in Florida next week, the USA ambassador to the United States said Thursday.

North Korea must be stopped on its path toward being able to threaten the United States with nuclear attack, Defence Secretary Jim Mattis says, as the USA imposes more sanctions on North Koreans for their links to the country's weapons programs. That will be the focus of the president's April 6-7 meeting with Xi at his Florida resort, she said. Cooperation with the U.S. China has used veto powers six times in tandem with Russian Federation in the U.N. Security Council, mainly in opposition of western sanctions on Syria's government for the alleged use of chemical weapons.

The US Treasury hit 11 North Korean business representatives and an industrial firm with sanctions today, seeking to further isolate the country's economy for pursuing nuclear weapons.

Eleven North Koreans have been sanctioned for links to the country's weapons program. But analysts agree that North Korea is determined to make progress on its nuclear and missile programs.

Among those designated are Jang Sung Nam, chief of a Chinese branch of the Tangun Trading Corp., which was sanctioned in 2009 for its involvement in North Korea's WMD and missile programs.

This letter comes as the South Korean military warns of an imminent nuclear test from the North, possibly in the first week of April.

"Yes, we will talk about North Korea", Trump told the newspaper for a story that appeared Sunday on its website.

On Syria, she said the Trump administration thinks President Bashar Assad is "a hindrance" to ending the war but "our priority is no longer to sit there and focus on getting Assad out". "We want to get the Iranian influence out because that is really a problem". The Trump administration has vowed to take a tougher stance against the regime after years of failed attempts to denuclearize North Korea. She said she plans to visit Geneva to talk to members about what the USA thinks an effective council should look like. "This is a war that would have an intensity of violence associated with it that we haven't seen since the last Korean War", he said.
