US, Mexico, and Canada to make joint bid for 2026 World Cup

Europe and Asia will be the next two to host a World Cup, which means they won't be able to bid for the next tournaments. And, although the U.S., Mexico and Canada each would have the infrastructure to host the tournament individually, Montagliani said a joint bid would be "a fit" for the new format.

The confederation made the final decision to go ahead with the bid at its meeting Saturday in Aruba, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the bid will not formally be announced until Monday in Manhattan.

But CONCACAF could receive pushback from regular World Cup participants Mexico, the US and Costa Rica, who could now be forced to play regional minnows rather than friendlies against elite teams from other continents.

Trump has also signed an executive order barring travelers from six Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. While the order has been stalled in federal courts-and Trump will be out of office by the time the 2026 World Cup comes around-the head of world soccer's governing body said last month that the policy could derail a U.S. bid.

Why make a joint bid when the US, Canada, and Mexico could host the tournament on their own?

. Russian Federation will host next summer's World Cup and the World Cup heads to Qatar in 2022. The political issues that plagued the 2002 World Cup are still in play, maybe more so now that US president Donald Trump has pledged to build a wall between his country and Mexico.

An investigation by a Concacaf integrity committee, set up by Jeff Webb, the president elected in 2012 after Warner stepped down, accused Warner of committing fraud against Concacaf and misappropriating Federation Internationale de Football Association funds, by representing the centre of excellence as Concacaf's when in fact it was built on land Warner owned and had bought for the goal. Gone would be the days of going to Europe and playing the likes of Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands, all of whom the USA have beaten in the last five years away from home.

Bidding for the 2026 tournament has always been part of Montagliani's vision.

More should be known in May. By most accounts, the three-nation bid is considered a strong early favorite.

The rules should be announced around its annual congress, on May 11 in Manama, Bahrain.
