Trump lauds 'outstanding' relationship with China's Xi after talks

The two sides reached the agreement, sharing the view that the North's nuclear advancement has reached "a very serious stage", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said during a briefing on the outcome of the summit talks at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The missile barrage enhances Trump's image as a leader willing to use US military power quickly and in a precision-strike manner - which is exactly the scenario that concerns North Korea most.

The two sides had "a real commitment to work together to see if this can be resolved in a peaceful way", Tillerson said.

Tillerson said there was no "no kind of a package arrangement" on the issue.

According to Blinken, negotiation is the only way to resolve the North Korean issue eventually and it should be done "when North Korea is prepared to engage in meaningful, authentic and credible discussions about denuclearization".

What worries the protocol-conscious Chinese more than policy clashes is the risk that the unpredictable Trump could publicly embarrass Xi, after several foreign leaders experienced awkward moments with the new US president.

Trump and Xi also established a new and cabinet-level framework for negotiations, he said.

During an interview with the Financial Times published Sunday, Trump warned that if China was unwilling to collaborate on North Korea, the United States would be willing to go it alone.

Ahead of the summit, Trump signed a pair of executive orders focussed on reducing the U.S. trade deficit.

Trump accepted Xi's invitation to visit China, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. The U.S. announced the missile attack shortly after Xi and his wife left the Mar-a-Lago estate Thursday night.

Discussions between Trump and Xi over North Korea came days after Trump warned that the United States was prepared to act unilaterally to stop North Korea's nuclear program from advancing further should China be unwilling to use its leverage over Pyongyang.

The Chinese have opposed efforts to remove Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad from power and probably took offense at the attack, said Dennis Wilder, former senior director for Asia during the George W. Bush administration. The Hermit Kingdom has been testing its ballistic missiles in recent months, and it has clearly moved ahead with its nuclear weapons program. Trump has indicated he plans to push his Chinese counterpart to get tougher on Pyongyang, Beijing's longtime ally.

"I don't believe there was any immediate nexus, " White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters on Friday.

North Korea's pursuit of a nuclear missile capable of striking the United States is the most pressing issue in the relationship. We, as Americans, I think have no choice but to try to find a solution with China.

Trump's aides insisted he had made good on his pledge to raise concerns about China's trade practices and said there was some headway, with Xi agreeing to a 100-day plan for trade talks aimed at boosting USA exports and reducing China's trade surplus with the United States.

Trump has previously criticized China's handling of North Korea, telling Reuters in March he was "not liking" the dynamic, adding, "I know exactly what's going on between China and North Korea and everybody else". He noted the historic responsibility of both countries - the world's largest economies and emerging military rivals - to work toward peace and stability.

Sources briefed on Xi's plans promised a package of Chinese investments aimed at creating more than 700,000 American jobs - the same number China's regional rival Japan pledged to Trump during Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Mar-a-Lago visit in February.

But Beijing has been reluctant to use its leverage for fears that pushing the regime too hard could result in instability in the North and even its collapse, which could lead to the emergence of a pro-U.S. nation on its border.

However, the bad-blood began to subside in the lead-up to Thursday's meeting after Trump backed away from threats to challenge Beijing over Taiwan and failed to follow through on threats to label China a currency manipulator on day one of his administration.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the US and China have agreed to increase cooperation on trying to get North Korea's to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
