Sessions added that President Trump's rhetoric and leadership was having a noticeable effect on border security, citing a recent DHS report indicating fewer illegal crossings.
He also said the Justice Department plans to add 50 more immigration judges in 2017 and 75 more in 2018.
Sessions defended Trump's proposed border wall, saying it will be another tool to fight illegal immigration amid efforts within the Justice Department and other branches of government to punish and deter border crossers.

Sessions also issued a memo to federal prosecutors that would up charges against undocumented immigrants.
"Depravity and violence are their calling cards", Sessions said in his prepared remarks.
Sessions said he was issuing a memo mandating prosecutors to prioritize immigration enforcement on offenses that were not "prosecuted in the past".
Prosecutors are now directed to charge criminal aliens with document fraud and aggravated identify theft which carries a two-year mandatory minimum federal sentence.
Sessions' immigration plans have always been foreshadowed.
Following the border tour, Sessions was scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at an International Association of Chiefs of Police conference outside Phoenix. The president also instructed federal officials to highlight immigrant crime, (though studies have shown immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than USA -born citizens) and ramped up pressure on local officials to engage in immigration enforcement.
Sessions urged federal prosecutors to intensify their focus on immigration crimes such as illegal crossing or smuggling others into the US, even though such prosecutions are already happening on a large scale.
