  • Taiwan bans eating dog and cat meat

Individuals who eat or trade dog or cat meat can now be fined between $1,640 and $8,200.

Those who chose not to respect the new law will face the consequences, including the most outrageous fine or two years behind bars.

Eating and selling dog and cat meat is already banned by local governments in some parts of Taiwan, but the law change will make it illegal throughout the island.

Their identity can also be made public under the new law, which was passed on Tuesday.

The country is set to become the first in Asia to ban the consumption of dog and cat meat, due to pet ownership increasing across the continent.

Taiwan's legislature is ramping up efforts to curb animal cruelty by doubling penalties and banning the sale and consumption of dog and cat meat.

Previous year a lamb meat restaurant was found serving dog meat to customers just to curtail the cost.

The new laws mean Taiwan now has some of the most robust animal protection legislation anywhere in Asia.

The amendments had additional provisions pertaining to animal abuse. As for the repeated offenders, they can face a jail term of up to five years and face much harsher fines.

The new law also takes into consideration pet's safety rights, making it illegal for a pet to be walked while its guardian is riding a scooter or driving a auto.

President Tsai Ing-wen's team portrayed her as an animal lover during her campaign, focusing on her two cats.

Amendments to the current legislation could lead to the outlawing of dog and cat consumption by the end of April. She also has three retired guide dogs, which she adopted.

Legislator Wang Yu-min hailed the landmark bill, saying it is a first in Asia and 'shows that Taiwan is a society with advanced animal welfare'.

One video a year ago, which went viral, showed a group of marines hanging a stray puppy by its neck and then throwing its body into the sea. Each year, the festival attracts the wrath of animal rights activists who call the practice of slaughtering dogs inhumane.
