  • San Jose Sharks At Edmonton Oilers Game Thread

Sharks forward Melker Karlsson fired a snap shot from the top of the right face-off circle past Oiler goalie Cam Talbot just over three minutes into the first overtime to seal a 3-2 win in Game 1 of the Western Conference quarter-final series. The Oilers were outshot 44-19.

It was the first playoff game in the Oilers' new downtown arena and the team's first National Hockey League post-season game in nearly 11 years.

"Part of it is being away from the game for two and half weeks and part of it is wearing that cage and getting used to it". They were able to best the Oilers on Wednesday without one of their better offensive weapons, but Edmonton likely will put up a fight in Game 2 before the series swings south.

FILE - At left, in a November 1, 2016, file photo, San Jose Sharks center Joe Thornton (19) skates to the puck against the Arizona Coyotes during the first period of an NHL hockey game, in Glendale, Ariz. But the Sharks aren't healthy and they aren't hot.

It was a dominant performance by the Oilers and particularly by Kassian, a fourth-line winger who drove the net effectively and delivered bone-jarring hits on the Sharks' Brenden Dillon and Logan Couture.

- It was a big night in San Jose Wednesday with a Game One victory for the Sharks in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Cam Talbot made 41 saves for the Oilers, while Sharks goalie Martin Jones stopped 17 shots, majority in the first period.

The Edmonton Oilers are in the playoffs.

The Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period only to get outshot 34-9 the rest of the way. Players who struggled mightily down the stretch as the Sharks squandered the nine-point lead that they held atop the Pacific Division on March 15 suddenly came to life, as if resuscitated.

The Oilers are as whole have been completely made over and only two Sharks remain from that series (Thornton and Marleau) and that series was over a decade ago and means absolutely nothing. And their second line of Milan Lucic, Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins went quiet after the first.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - A busy night by goalie Jake Allen and an overtime goal by Joel Edmundson propelled St. Louis over Minnesota in the opener of their first-round playoff series.

The building erupted when the Oilers took the ice, the cheers became deafening when McDavid was introduced.

While the orange crush flooded Rogers Place, fans in matching jerseys streamed into bars and restaurants along Whyte Avenue.

Hopes are high after the Sharks made it to the Stanley Cup Finals past year. They were ready to celebrate, and for a while, the fans did.

According to Rovell, the prize awarded to the Idzans started at $76,000 on Wednesday night because a previous victor had not come forward to claim their winnings, which under Canadian law are tax free.

One fellow in the crowd stood gripping a sign.

The Oilers continued to dictate the pace in the early going.
