You may have to start tipping your Uber driver

  • Ola Uber strike Drivers to go on strike in New Delhi on Tuesday against long hours pittance pay

The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission has chose to move ahead with a proposal that could (if implemented) force cab aggregators to offer options for tipping, regardless o the kind of payment they accept.

Uber passengers always have the option to leave a cash tip, but many choose not to because they don't have cash on them or simply because they aren't encouraged to.

On its website, Uber said riders are not obliged to tip, but drivers can accept cash if offered.

The Independent Drivers Guild, a union-backed association that advocates for New York's Uber drivers, petitioned the commission to pursue the tip rule.

Conigliaro said that he thinks passengers will toss some extra money to drivers if they're given the option.

The move comes in response to a petition signed by 11,000 Uber drivers. Or, another way of looking at it: since its inception, Uber has refused to do right by its drivers and allow for tipping within its app. Once the TLC decides to initiate rule making, it will draft the rule package, which then must be certified by the NYC Law Department.

Uber's chief rival, Lyft, has offered the option to tip drivers in its app since it was founded in 2012.

Meanwhile, Lyft allows riders to tip, as do other taxi and auto service apps, and we haven't seen any evidence that it's led to rampant racism. While digital tipping has yet to go mainstream outside of cafes and taxis, American consumers are more likely to touch-type a tip if the staff member is standing (or sitting) expectantly nearby.

"It is the first time that 12 unions of autorickshaws and kaali-peeli taxis are joining us", said Ravi Rathore of Sarvodaya Driver Association of Delhi (SDAD).

"This rule proposal will be an important first step to improve earning potential in the For-Hire Vehicle industry, but it is just one piece of a more comprehensive effort to improve the economic well-being of drivers", said TLC Commissioner Meera Joshi.

"Uber is always striving to offer the best earning opportunity for drivers and we are constantly working to improve the driver experience", she said.

Today's victory means that the TLC has agreed to write a rule, which will have to be written, submitted to the public for comments, and ultimately voted on by the commission. The interface wouldn't ask you to tip immediately after a ride, but rather users would have to manually select find their last ride.

Last month, Lyft announced that its in-app tipping option had hit the "milestone" of $200 million in driver gratuities.

Uber assigns a cost for a booking fee, plus a per-mile cost and a per-minute cost that the driver makes for each ride.
